Data analytics course in India: what to learn and what it pays

Analytics is the most reliable career switch in Indian tech. What the syllabus must contain, why SQL depth decides interviews, salary by city, and how to build a portfolio in three projects.

Data analytics is the most reliable career switch available in Indian tech, and the reason is unglamorous: the entry skill is SQL, SQL is learnable in weeks, and demand outstrips the supply of people who can actually write it under pressure.

That said, most analytics courses in India teach the wrong emphasis. Here is what actually matters.

What the syllabus must contain

1Business fundamentals first. P&L, unit economics, metric definitions. Analysts who cannot frame a business question produce charts nobody uses.

2SQL to real depth. Not SELECT statements — multi-table joins, window functions, CTEs, and knowing why a query is slow. This is the round that eliminates most candidates.

3Advanced Excel. Dismissed by people who have not worked in Indian companies. Finance, operations and sales run on spreadsheets, and an analyst who builds a clean pivot-driven model earns immediate credibility.

4Data cleaning. A third of the job and the least taught. Missing values, duplicates, wrong entries, outliers, reconciling sources that disagree.

5A BI tool properly. Power BI with DAX, or Tableau. One deeply beats both superficially. DAX is where most learners stall, and pushing through it is what employers test.

6Statistics enough to avoid being wrong. Sampling, correlation versus causation, significance, and why a two-day A/B test means nothing.

7Communication. Explaining a finding to a non-technical manager. Frequently the deciding interview round.

If a syllabus leads with Python and machine learning for an analytics role, it is training you for data science and will leave you weak on the SQL and business framing that analytics interviews actually test.

The three portfolio projects that work

1A business diagnosis. Answer a real question a manager would ask — why margin fell, which cohort churns. Deliver the SQL, a dashboard and a one-page memo.

2A published live dashboard. On Power BI service or Tableau Public, with every metric definition documented so an interviewer can click it.

3A messy-data project. Use ugly public data — Indian government datasets are ideal — and document your cleaning decisions. This demonstrates the third of the job everyone else hides.

For each, write what you found, what you would do about it, and what the data could not tell you. That last point signals more maturity than any chart.

Market opportunity

Can I switch to data analytics from a non-technical background?+

Yes, and it is one of the few fields where this reliably works. Domain knowledge from finance, operations, sales or marketing is a genuine advantage because framing the right question matters more than tool proficiency. Power BI or Tableau — which should I learn?+

Power BI has more openings in Indian enterprises because of widespread Microsoft licensing; Tableau appears more in product companies and consulting. Learn one properly rather than both superficially. Power BI requires DAX, which is where most learners stall and precisely what employers test.

How long does it take to become job-ready in data analytics?+

Six months of consistent part-time study is realistic, provided you complete portfolio projects rather than only consuming material. Roughly two months on SQL and business fundamentals, one on a BI tool, and three building projects and preparing for interviews.

What projects should be in a data analytics portfolio?+
