Business analyst career in India: what the role is and what it pays

Business analyst is the most confused job title in Indian hiring. What the three distinct versions actually involve, salary by city and industry, and the skills that separate hired candidates from certified ones.

"Business analyst" describes at least three different jobs in Indian hiring, and candidates routinely prepare for one and interview for another. Sorting that out first makes everything else easier.

Read the job description, not the title. If it mentions user stories, JIRA and sprint ceremonies, it is an IT BA role. If it mentions SQL, dashboards and metrics, it is closer to a data analyst. If it mentions process mapping and stakeholder workshops, it is consulting-flavoured. The interviews differ completely.

By industry

Industry matters more for BA roles than for most analytics jobs, because domain knowledge is a large part of what you are paid for. BFSI in Mumbai and healthcare BA roles carry a premium precisely because the domain takes time to learn.

That first row is the honest signal. If you dislike repeated conversations with people who describe what they want inconsistently, this role will frustrate you. If you are good at extracting a clear requirement from a vague complaint, it pays well.

Skills that matter, in order

1Requirement elicitation. Getting a usable specification out of a stakeholder who does not know what they want. The core skill and the least teachable from a course.

2Written clarity. BA output is documents other people build from. Ambiguous writing produces wrong software.

3SQL. Increasingly non-negotiable even in IT BA roles, because "can you check that yourself" is now a normal request.

4Process mapping. BPMN or simple flowcharts. Being able to draw a current-state and future-state process is genuinely valued.

5A BI tool. Power BI or Tableau. You will be asked to show data, not just describe it.

6Domain knowledge. Banking, insurance, retail, healthcare. This is what moves you up a band faster than any tool.

7Agile fluency. User stories, acceptance criteria, backlog grooming. Table stakes in product and IT BA roles.

If you enjoy people and process, business analyst. If you enjoy problems and numbers, data analyst. Both are legitimate, both pay comparably at entry, and the paths diverge later — BA towards product and consulting, DA towards analytics leadership and data science.

The portfolio for a BA role

BA portfolios are unusual because the output is documents. Three artefacts work.

1A requirements document for something real — even a feature on an app you use. Problem statement, user stories with acceptance criteria, edge cases, out-of-scope items.

2A current-state and future-state process map with the inefficiencies named and quantified. Pick a process you have actually seen, at work or in a family business.

3A dashboard with a memo showing you can answer a business question with data rather than only describe the requirement.

Interviewers will ask you to walk through the requirements document and will deliberately introduce an ambiguity to see whether you notice. Practise defending your own decisions before the interview, including the ones you would now make differently.

Career progression

—BA → Senior BA → Lead BA. The default ladder, moving from documenting to shaping.

—BA → Product Owner → Product Manager. The highest-ceiling route, common in Indian product companies.

—BA → Business Analytics / Analytics Manager. If you add SQL and modelling depth.

—BA → Management consultant. Process and stakeholder skills transfer directly.

—BA → Programme or delivery manager. If you prefer coordination to specification.

Market opportunity

Two things sustain BA hiring in India. Global capability centres continue to expand here, and they need people who can sit between business users abroad and engineering teams locally — which is exactly the BA function. And Indian enterprises are running large digitisation programmes where the constraint is rarely engineering capacity but clear requirements.

The honest caution: routine documentation work is being compressed. AI tools draft user stories and summarise meetings competently. What is not automated is extracting a real requirement from a stakeholder who contradicts themselves, spotting the edge case nobody mentioned, and having the judgement to say a request should not be built. BAs whose value was typing up notes are exposed; those who improve the decision are not.
