Business analytics course in India: the discipline between data and decisions

Business analytics is not data science with a friendlier name. What the discipline actually covers, how it differs from data analytics, salary by city and industry, and who it suits.

Business analytics is frequently sold as data science for people who dislike coding, which is both unfair and misleading. It is a distinct discipline with a different centre of gravity: the question rather than the model.

Understanding that difference determines whether you enjoy the work and whether you get hired for it.

What business analytics actually covers

—Framing the business question. Turning "sales are down" into something answerable with data. The hardest and most valuable skill in the discipline.

—Metric definition and governance. Why finance and sales report different revenue numbers, and how to make one version authoritative.

—Descriptive and diagnostic analysis. What happened and why — the majority of real business analytics work.

—Forecasting and scenario modelling. What happens if we raise price 8%, or if churn worsens by two points.

—Decision support. Presenting options with trade-offs rather than presenting data and leaving the thinking to someone else.

—Domain economics. Understanding the business well enough to know which numbers matter and which are noise.

The distinguishing skill is not statistical. It is knowing which question is worth answering, and having the judgement to say "this data cannot tell you that" when it cannot. Analysts who manufacture a confident answer from insufficient data cause more damage than those who decline.

The skill stack

1Business fundamentals. P&L structure, unit economics, margin drivers, working capital. Without this, everything else produces charts nobody acts on.

2SQL. Increasingly expected even in business-facing roles, because "can you check that yourself" is now normal. Joins, aggregation, window functions.

3Advanced Excel and modelling. Scenario models, sensitivity analysis, cohort tables. Still the working language of Indian finance and operations teams.

4A BI tool. Power BI with DAX or Tableau. One properly.

5Statistics for decisions. Sampling, significance, correlation versus causation — enough to avoid being confidently wrong.

6Structured communication. Pyramid-principle writing, one-page memos, presenting to people who will not read past the first paragraph.

Industry matters more here than in data analytics, because domain knowledge is a large part of what you are paid for. BFSI in Mumbai, manufacturing in Pune and Coimbatore, and healthcare all carry premiums for people who understand the sector.
