Shopify development course in India: build stores, bill clients

Shopify development is one of the shortest paths from zero to billable in India. What a build actually involves, India-specific setup, what to charge, and where the recurring revenue is.

Shopify development is unusual among technical skills: you can be billable within weeks rather than months, and the work repeats. Indian small businesses move online continuously, most cannot build a store themselves, and a competent build takes days.

This guide covers what the work actually involves, what to charge, and where the durable income is.

What a Shopify build actually involves

Less coding than people expect, more configuration and judgement.

1Store setup. Account, domain, plan selection, and the settings clients get wrong — taxes, shipping zones, notifications.
2Catalogue architecture. Products, variants, collections, metafields. Getting this wrong early makes everything afterwards painful.
3Theme customisation. Sections, blocks, and light Liquid editing. Most builds need no custom development at all.
4Payments for India. Razorpay or Shopify Payments with UPI enabled. UPI is not optional — its absence measurably costs orders.
5COD with verification. Offer it, but pair it with an OTP or WhatsApp verification app. Unverified COD is where RTO losses come from.
6Shipping. Shiprocket or Delhivery integration with realistic delivery estimates.
7GST configuration. Correct HSN codes and tax rates from launch, not retrofitted at filing.
8Apps, chosen carefully. Reviews, upsell, WhatsApp, loyalty. Each adds scripts and slows the store, so the skill is saying no.
9Conversion detail. Product page structure, trust signals, checkout reduction — this is what separates a store that sells from a store that exists.
10Speed and QA. Indian mobile connections punish weight harder than desktop testing reveals.

The most valuable thing you learn is app restraint. Clients want fifteen apps; each one adds JavaScript to every page. A fast store with six well-chosen apps outperforms a feature-rich store nobody waits for.

What to charge in India

ScopeFeeTimeline
Basic store, small catalogue₹15,000–₹30,0003–5 days
Standard D2C build₹30,000–₹60,0001–2 weeks
Custom design + migration₹60,000–₹1,50,0002–4 weeks
Monthly maintenance retainer₹5,000–₹20,000Ongoing
CRO / optimisation retainer₹15,000–₹40,000Ongoing

The build fee is the entry point; the retainer is the business. A developer with eight maintenance clients at ₹10,000 has ₹80,000 monthly before any new builds, and maintenance work is far less demanding than delivery.

Employed roles

RoleMonthlyNotes
Shopify developer (0–2 yr)₹20,000–₹40,000Agency or D2C brand
Shopify developer (2–4 yr)₹40,000–₹80,000Liquid and app integration
Ecommerce manager₹50,000–₹1,20,000Store plus operations
Shopify Plus specialist₹80,000–₹2,00,000Scarce, enterprise clients

Getting your first clients

Build one store properly and screenshot everything. Yours, a family business, anything real. One live store beats a portfolio of mockups.
Audit stores that already exist. Load speed, missing UPI, no reviews, broken mobile checkout. A free three-point audit converts better than any pitch.
Target businesses already selling offline. They have products, customers and revenue — they just have no store. Easier sale than convincing someone to start a business.
Local first. Businesses in your own city will meet you, which shortens the trust gap considerably.
Sell the retainer at the start, not after. "Build plus six months maintenance" is an easier yes than going back later.

Market opportunity

Indian ecommerce keeps adding sellers from beyond the metros, and the supply of competent store builders has not kept pace. Most agencies price for larger clients, which leaves the ₹15,000–₹60,000 segment underserved and largely served by people who deliver slow, over-apped stores.

That is the gap. Fast, clean, correctly configured for Indian payments and logistics, delivered in days rather than weeks. It is not glamorous work and it stays in demand.

Shopify development training across India

Careers Ninza runs every batch live online, so the class is identical whether you join from a metro or a tier-2 city — same mentor, same time, same fee. There is no separate recorded track for students outside our classroom cities, and no city-based pricing.

TIER 1 CITIES

Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Pune.

TIER 2 CITIES

Jaipur, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Indore, Bhopal, Coimbatore, Surat, Kochi, Nagpur, Patna, Vadodara, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Kanpur, Agra, Amritsar, Dehradun, Mysuru, Thiruvananthapuram, Nashik, Rajkot, Varanasi, Meerut, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Srinagar. See all locations →

Classroom batches run in Kolkata, Asansol and Durgapur. Everywhere else is live online, which in practice most working professionals and students prefer — no commute, and every session is recorded for revision.

Why Careers Ninza

Live, never pre-recorded. Every session is taught in real time by a working practitioner. There is no cheaper self-paced tier, because removing the live class removes the reason the course works.
125,000+ students trained since 2014. Twelve years of running live batches, not a platform that appeared last year.
100+ mentors who still do the job. Analysts, engineers, marketers and founders teaching what they practise this quarter.
You launch a real store. The course ends with a live store taking payments — yours or a client’s — configured for UPI, COD verification, GST and Shiprocket rather than a generic international setup.
No-Cost EMI, zero hidden fees. The listed fee is the fee. No interest, no processing charge, no lender.
Rejoin any future batch free if you fall behind, and lifetime access to every recording.
Honest claims. No job guarantees, no invented placement percentages, no implied accreditation.

Shopify Store Development is 20 hours at ₹9,999 and you finish with a live store plus a repeatable client build process. Ecompreneurship is six months at ₹49,999 covering the whole ecommerce business.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fee for a Shopify course in India?+

Careers Ninza charges ₹9,999 for the 20-hour Shopify Store Development workshop, and you finish with a live store. Market rates run ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 for recorded courses and ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 for longer agency-style programs.

How much can I charge for building a Shopify store in India?+

₹15,000 to ₹30,000 for a basic store with a small catalogue, ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 for a standard D2C build, and ₹60,000 to ₹1,50,000 for custom design or migration. Monthly maintenance retainers of ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 per client are where the durable income sits.

Do I need coding knowledge for Shopify development?+

Very little. Most builds need only configuration, theme customisation through sections and blocks, and light Liquid editing. HTML and CSS help for finer control, but a competent build usually requires no custom development at all.

How long does it take to learn Shopify development?+

Twenty hours of live training with a real store build is enough to deliver client work. Most people take on their first paid build within four to six weeks, since the constraint is confidence and a portfolio piece rather than knowledge depth.

What is the salary of a Shopify developer in India?+

₹20,000 to ₹40,000 monthly at entry, ₹40,000 to ₹80,000 with two to four years, ₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000 as an ecommerce manager, and ₹80,000 to ₹2,00,000 for Shopify Plus specialists, who remain scarce.

What Indian-specific setup does a Shopify store need?+

UPI enabled through Razorpay or Shopify Payments, COD paired with OTP or WhatsApp verification to control RTO losses, Shiprocket or Delhivery integration with realistic delivery estimates, and correct GST HSN codes configured from launch rather than retrofitted at filing.

Is Shopify better than WooCommerce for Indian clients?+

For most D2C clients, yes — nothing breaks on its own, the checkout is optimised, and Indian payment and logistics integrations are mature. WooCommerce suits content-led businesses or clients who can maintain infrastructure themselves. WooCommerce looks cheaper and often is not once maintenance is counted.

How do I get my first Shopify client?+

Build one store properly and screenshot everything, then audit existing stores for free — load speed, missing UPI, no reviews, broken mobile checkout. Target businesses already selling offline, since they have products and customers and simply lack a store. Start local, where meeting in person shortens the trust gap.

Is Shopify training available in my city?+

Yes. Batches run live online, so learners join from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Surat, Jaipur, Indore, Rajkot, Coimbatore, Kochi, Ludhiana and every other Indian city at the same fee.

Can Shopify development be a full-time freelance career?+

Yes, and the retainer model makes it stable. A developer with eight maintenance clients at ₹10,000 monthly earns ₹80,000 before any new builds, and maintenance is far less demanding than delivery. Selling build plus six months maintenance upfront is easier than adding it later.
