Drop shipping and drop servicing in India: the honest version

Both models are sold dishonestly and both can work. Real margins, real capital requirements, why most attempts fail in month two, and which of the two suits India better.

Drop shipping and drop servicing are the most aggressively oversold business models on the Indian internet. They are also both legitimate, and people do make money from them. Reconciling those two facts requires being specific about numbers, which the people selling courses about them rarely are.

What each model actually is

Drop servicing suits India considerably better than drop shipping, and almost nobody selling courses says so. Margins are two to three times higher, there is no inventory or logistics risk, no RTO, and the delivery partners are the same freelance talent pool you can access easily and cheaply.

Why drop shipping is harder in India than the videos suggest

RTO. COD is expected by a large share of Indian buyers, and 15–30% of COD orders are refused on delivery. You pay forward and reverse shipping on every one. This single factor destroys the margin maths most courses present.
Delivery times. International dropshipping means two to four weeks. Indian buyers accustomed to two-day delivery cancel, dispute and leave reviews.
Thin margins meet rising CPMs. A 15% margin on a ₹1,200 product is ₹180. If your CAC is ₹250, you are paying to lose money at scale.
Supplier reliability. You own the customer relationship and control none of the fulfilment. One bad supplier week generates refunds you fund.
GST and compliance. Registration is required, invoicing must be correct, and the paperwork is real even when the business is small.

Why drop servicing works better here

1Higher margin. Charge a client ₹30,000 for a website, pay a developer ₹15,000. That 50% is normal and defensible, because you carry the client relationship, quality control and risk.
2No inventory, no logistics, no RTO. The failure modes are entirely about delivery quality and communication, both of which you control.
3The talent supply is deep. India has an enormous freelance pool across design, development, writing, video and marketing at rates that leave real margin.
4Recurring revenue is natural. Website maintenance, monthly content, ongoing ad management. Drop shipping has to win each sale again.
5You can start with one service you understand. Which also means you can judge whether the work delivered is good.

The honest constraint on drop servicing: you must be able to evaluate quality in the service you sell. Selling SEO you do not understand means you cannot tell a good delivery partner from a bad one, and the client finds out before you do.

Realistic capital and timeline

ItemDrop shippingDrop servicing
Store or site₹5,000–₹15,000₹5,000–₹10,000
Test ad spend₹20,000–₹50,000₹5,000–₹15,000
Samples / trial delivery₹5,000–₹15,000₹0
Working capital₹10,000–₹20,000Minimal — collect advance
Realistic month to break even4–82–5

Why most attempts fail in month two

No unit economics before launch. Starting without knowing allowable CAC guarantees spending past the point of profitability.
Underfunded testing. ₹5,000 of ad spend produces no usable signal. You need enough conversions to exit the learning phase before concluding anything.
Choosing a product with no margin. Cheap, heavy, or heavily competed. Any one of the three is fatal.
No supplier or partner vetting. Testing with your own money and your own order before a customer does is the entire difference.
Quitting at week three. Both models have a genuine learning curve where nothing works yet, and it looks identical to failure.
Believing the course. Anyone showing you a ₹10 lakh month without showing the ad spend, refunds and RTO alongside it is selling the course, not the model.

Market opportunity

The real opportunity in India is drop servicing to small businesses, and it is unglamorous. Clinics, coaching centres, contractors, retailers and manufacturers all need websites, content, ads and video, and none of them want to manage five freelancers to get it.

Being the single accountable point of contact who delivers reliably is a business. It requires no invention, no inventory and no logistics — only the ability to judge quality, communicate clearly, and not disappear when something goes wrong. That last one eliminates most of the competition.

Drop shipping and drop servicing training across India

Careers Ninza runs every batch live online, so the class is identical whether you join from a metro or a tier-2 city — same mentor, same time, same fee. There is no separate recorded track for students outside our classroom cities, and no city-based pricing.

Why Careers Ninza

Live, never pre-recorded. Every session is taught in real time by a working practitioner. There is no cheaper self-paced tier, because removing the live class removes the reason the course works.
125,000+ students trained since 2014. Twelve years of running live batches, not a platform that appeared last year.
100+ mentors who still do the job. Analysts, engineers, marketers and founders teaching what they practise this quarter.
Honest about margins and failure rates. We teach both models with real numbers including RTO, and a scale-or-stop decision framework — so you leave knowing which fits you and how to test it cheaply rather than believing a pitch.
No-Cost EMI, zero hidden fees. The listed fee is the fee. No interest, no processing charge, no lender.
Rejoin any future batch free if you fall behind, and lifetime access to every recording.
Honest claims. No job guarantees, no invented placement percentages, no implied accreditation.

Drop Shipping & Drop Servicing is 30 hours at ₹9,999 — model selection, demand research, unit economics before launch, supplier and partner vetting, test budgets, fulfilment and a go or no-go decision backed by numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Is drop shipping still profitable in India in 2027?+

It can be, but the margins are thin and RTO makes it harder than the videos suggest. Fifteen to thirty percent of COD orders are refused on delivery and you pay shipping both ways. Products with under 25 percent margin rarely survive Indian acquisition costs.

What is drop servicing and how is it different from drop shipping?+

Drop servicing means selling a service — websites, content, ads, video — and delivering it through a freelancer or partner agency. Margins run 30 to 50 percent against 10 to 25 percent for drop shipping, with no inventory, no logistics and no RTO risk.

Which is better in India, drop shipping or drop servicing?+

Drop servicing, for most people. Higher margins, lower capital, no logistics risk, natural recurring revenue, and India has a deep freelance talent pool at rates that leave real margin. The constraint is that you must understand the service well enough to judge delivery quality.

How much money do I need to start drop shipping in India?+

Realistically ₹30,000 to ₹80,000: ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 for the store, ₹20,000 to ₹50,000 for genuine test ad spend, ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 for samples, plus working capital. Underfunded testing is the most common reason people conclude the model does not work.

How much money do I need to start drop servicing?+

₹10,000 to ₹30,000, mostly for a simple site and modest test ad spend. You can collect an advance from clients before paying your delivery partner, so working capital requirements are minimal compared with any inventory-based model.

What is RTO and why does it matter so much in India?+

Return to Origin — a COD order refused by the customer on delivery. RTO commonly runs 15 to 30 percent on COD orders in India and you pay both forward and reverse shipping. Ignoring it when calculating margin is why most dropshipping profit projections are wrong.

Do I need GST registration for drop shipping in India?+

Yes for marketplace selling regardless of turnover, and in practice most sellers register from the start even for their own store, because input tax credit on ad spend and packaging materially improves margins. Correct invoicing is required from the first order.

How long before a drop shipping or drop servicing business breaks even?+

Drop shipping typically four to eight months; drop servicing two to five, because margins are higher and capital requirements lower. Both have an early phase where nothing works yet, which looks identical to failure and is where most people quit.

Is drop shipping training available in my city?+

Yes. All batches run live online, so learners join from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Surat, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Indore, Rajkot, Ludhiana, Coimbatore, Nagpur, Patna and every other Indian city at the same fee.

What does the Careers Ninza drop shipping course cover?+

Drop Shipping & Drop Servicing is 30 hours at ₹9,999: choosing between the two models, demand research, unit economics calculated before launch, supplier and partner vetting, store or service site build, test budgets and creative, fulfilment and refund handling, and a scale-or-stop decision framework backed by numbers.
