How to use Claude AI at work: the 7 levels, explained
Think of Claude as a ladder. At the bottom you ask it things; at the top it runs inside products and whole organisations. What each level does, which plan it needs, and where the real value is.
The best way to understand Claude is as a ladder of seven levels. At the bottom you ask questions. As you climb, you hand over more of the real work: creating files, connecting your data, working inside your apps, delegating whole tasks, writing software, and finally running inside products and organisations.
Most people stop at the first rung. That is not a criticism; Level 1 is genuinely useful. But the biggest time savings at work sit a few rungs higher, and getting there does not require coding until Level 6. Here is what each level does, with an example from everyday project and office work.
Level 1: What can Claude do in a conversation?
At Level 1 you ask and Claude answers, on the web, the desktop app or the mobile app. That covers far more than simple questions: explaining a code or standard, drafting and editing emails and reports, reading an uploaded PDF, contract, drawing or site photo, searching the web for current information, and running longer Research for a cited report. Projects group chats and reference files under one topic, and memory carries your preferences across chats.
Example: “Compare erection sequence options for a 40 m span shed and list the safety risks of each.”
Level 2: Can Claude make finished files?
Yes. At Level 2 Claude produces deliverables, not just answers: Excel workbooks with working formulas, Word documents, PowerPoint decks and PDFs you download and use. It also builds Artifacts, small interactive tools such as a calculator or a punch-list tracker, without any coding on your part, and it cleans, analyses and charts messy data.
Level 3: How does Claude read your business data?
Connectors link Claude to apps such as Gmail, Google Drive, Calendar, Slack and Notion. Instead of pasting text in, you ask Claude to find the vendor email thread, search Drive for the latest quality plan, or prepare a meeting brief from your calendar. You control what each connector can see.
Level 4: Can Claude work inside Excel and PowerPoint?
Yes. Claude for Microsoft 365 brings Claude into Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook, working on your real files. Claude in Chrome navigates websites and fills forms. Claude Design creates layouts, posters and mockups by conversation. For teams on Team and Enterprise plans, @Claude can be tagged in Slack. We cover the Office side in detail in our guide to Claude for Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
Level 5: What does delegating a task to Claude mean?
At Level 5 you hand over a whole task, not a single question. Claude plans the steps, works with files on your computer and its tools, and comes back with the result. Since September 2026 these capabilities, previously the separate Cowork product, are part of the main Claude app, rolling out to paid plans first. Tasks can be scheduled and dispatched from your phone. Our guide to delegating multi-step work to Claude explains how to brief and review it.
Level 6: Can non-programmers use Claude Code?
Claude Code writes and maintains software. It runs in a terminal, a desktop app, editors such as VS Code and JetBrains, on the web and from mobile. Developers use it for features, bugs, tests and reviews; non-programmers increasingly use it to build internal tools, as we explain in Claude Code for non-programmers.
Level 7: How do companies build on Claude?
At the top, companies put Claude inside their own products through the Claude Platform API, choosing models by job (Haiku for speed, Sonnet for balance, Opus, Fable and Mythos for harder reasoning), giving it tools to call their systems, and processing documents in batches. Across an organisation, Team and Enterprise plans add admin controls and organisation-wide skills, and MCP connects Claude to internal systems. Our plain-English guide to MCP covers that layer.
What does each level need?
Claude is made by Anthropic. Careers Ninza is an independent training institute and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic. Product names and plan details are as published on claude.com in October 2026 and can change; check the current pricing page before you buy a plan.
What does one task look like at each level?
Take the weekly progress report most project teams produce. At Level 1 you ask Claude how to structure it. At Level 2 you upload the raw tracker and get back a formatted report and deck. At Level 3 Claude pulls the latest numbers from the shared drive and the vendor emails itself. At Level 4 it updates the real workbook and slides in your template. At Level 5 you schedule it, and the draft is waiting every Monday morning for you to review.
At Level 6, someone builds a small app so supervisors enter progress from their phones, removing the messy tracker altogether. At Level 7, the company connects that app and its project system through MCP, so every manager can ask plain-language questions about progress across all sites. Same task, very different amounts of human effort.
How should you climb the ladder?
Where is the real value for most professionals?
For project, operations, finance and office roles, the biggest jump usually comes at Levels 2, 4 and 5: turning trackers, progress reports and inspection records into finished outputs, then delegating the repetitive reporting completely. Levels 6 and 7 matter most if you build tools or run IT and transformation.
