WordPress speed optimisation: a Core Web Vitals guide that actually works

Slow WordPress sites lose visitors, leads and rankings. What Core Web Vitals measure, the fixes that move the numbers, and the plugin habits that quietly make sites slow.

To speed up a WordPress site, measure first with PageSpeed Insights, then fix the biggest causes in order: slow hosting, heavy images, too many plugins and scripts, missing caching, and layout shifts from late-loading elements. Core Web Vitals give you three targets: LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP of 200 milliseconds or less, and CLS of 0.1 or less.

Speed is not a vanity metric. On mobile connections across India, a slow page loses visitors before they read a word, and search engines use page experience as one of many signals. The good news is that most WordPress sites are slow for a handful of fixable reasons.

What do Core Web Vitals measure?

Google’s Core Web Vitals are three user-experience measurements:

MetricMeasuresGood target
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)How fast the main content appearsWithin 2.5 seconds
INP (Interaction to Next Paint)How quickly the page responds to taps and clicks200 milliseconds or less
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)How much the layout jumps while loading0.1 or less

Test with PageSpeed Insights. It shows real-user data where available and lab data for diagnosis. Always check the mobile result; that is where most Indian traffic is and where problems show first.

Why are most WordPress sites slow?

—Cheap or overloaded hosting: a slow server delays everything that follows.
—Huge images: uploading a 4 MB phone photo for a 400-pixel slot.
—Page builders and heavy themes: lots of code for simple layouts.
—Plugin overload: each plugin can add scripts and database queries.
—Third-party scripts: chat widgets, pop-ups, multiple tracking tags and embeds.
—No caching: every visit rebuilds the page from scratch.

Which fixes move LCP the most?

LCP is usually the hero image or headline. Make sure that element loads first and fast: compress and resize the hero image, serve modern formats such as WebP, do not lazy-load the hero, and preload it if needed. Improve server response with better hosting and page caching. Remove render-blocking CSS and scripts that delay the first paint. Fonts matter too: limit families and weights, and let text show while fonts load.

How do you improve INP?

INP suffers when the browser is busy running JavaScript when a visitor taps. Cut unnecessary scripts, delay non-essential ones such as chat widgets until after interaction, avoid sliders and animation libraries you do not need, and check which plugins load scripts on every page even when they are used on one. A lighter theme often fixes INP more than any single setting.

How do you stop layout shift?

—Always set width and height on images and videos.
—Reserve space for ads, embeds and banners before they load.
—Avoid inserting notices or pop-ups above existing content.
—Use font loading settings that do not cause big text reflows.

Which caching and hosting setup is sensible?

Use page caching through your host or a reputable caching plugin, object caching on busier sites, and a CDN for images and static files if your audience is spread across regions. Hosting with servers or a CDN presence close to Indian visitors reduces latency. Keep PHP and WordPress updated; newer versions are usually faster and more secure.

Do not stack several optimisation plugins that do the same job. Overlapping caching or minification often breaks layouts and makes debugging miserable.

A practical order of work

—Measure the homepage and two key pages on mobile, and note LCP, INP and CLS.
—Fix hosting and caching first, because they affect every page.
—Compress and resize images, and set dimensions everywhere.
—Audit plugins: remove unused ones and replace heavy ones.
—Delay or remove non-essential third-party scripts.
—Re-test, then repeat for the next biggest issue.

How does speed connect to SEO and conversions?

Faster pages tend to keep visitors longer and convert better, and page experience is part of how search engines evaluate sites, alongside content quality and relevance. Speed will not rescue weak content, but slow pages waste good content. Our guide to ranking in Google and AI answers covers the content side.

How should images be handled on WordPress?

Images are usually the single largest part of a page. Resize them to the largest size they will actually display, compress them, and serve WebP or another modern format where supported. Use responsive image sizes so phones download smaller files than desktops. Lazy-load images below the fold, but never the main image at the top of the page. A disciplined upload habit, resizing before uploading, prevents most problems before any plugin is needed.

How do you keep a site fast over time?

Speed decays as people add plugins, embeds and tracking tags. Re-test key pages every month and after every major change, keep a short list of approved plugins, and review third-party scripts each quarter. Assign one person to own site performance; without an owner, every new marketing tool quietly adds weight until the site is slow again. A one-line monthly speed note in the team report is enough to keep it visible.

When should you rebuild rather than optimise?

If a site runs on an outdated theme with dozens of plugins and a page builder layered on top, optimisation can only go so far. A clean rebuild on a lightweight theme, with only the plugins you truly need, is often cheaper than months of patching, and much easier to maintain. Our guide to WordPress development as a career explains the skills involved.

The short version: measure on mobile, fix hosting and caching, tame images and plugins, and keep an owner for speed. Most sites get dramatically faster without any exotic tricks.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make my WordPress site faster?+

Measure with PageSpeed Insights on mobile, then fix the biggest causes in order: better hosting and page caching, compressed and correctly sized images, fewer and lighter plugins, delayed third-party scripts, and fixed image dimensions to stop layout shift. Re-test after each change.

What are good Core Web Vitals scores?+

Google's recommended targets are Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, measured on real users where data is available.

Do too many plugins slow down WordPress?+

The number matters less than what each plugin does. A few heavy plugins that load scripts on every page or run expensive database queries can slow a site more than many small ones. Audit them and remove or replace the heaviest.

Which caching plugin is best for WordPress?+

It depends on your host. Many managed hosts provide server-level caching, in which case you need little else. Otherwise use one reputable caching plugin and avoid stacking several that do the same job, which often causes conflicts.

Does website speed affect Google rankings?+

Page experience, including Core Web Vitals, is one of many signals Google uses, alongside content quality and relevance. Speed alone will not make weak content rank, but slow pages make good content perform worse for visitors.

How do I fix a slow LCP in WordPress?+

Find which element is the LCP, usually the hero image or headline, then compress and resize that image, avoid lazy-loading it, preload it if needed, improve server response with caching and hosting, and remove render-blocking resources.

Is Elementor or another page builder bad for speed?+

Page builders add code, which can slow a site if used heavily or with many add-ons. They can be fast enough with careful use, good hosting and caching, but a lightweight theme with fewer layers usually performs better.
