SEO, GEO, AEO and AIO: the complete ranking guide for 2026
Four acronyms, one job: getting found. What each actually means, how AI answers changed the rules, and a step-by-step method for ranking in any Indian city.
Search stopped being one thing. A decade ago you optimised for ten blue links and that was the whole job. Now the same query can return an AI Overview, a local pack, a video carousel, a set of links, and an answer inside ChatGPT that never sends anyone to your site at all.
Four acronyms have grown up around this, and most articles about them are written by people repeating each other. Here is what each actually means, where they overlap, and what to do about them if you run a business in India.
The four acronyms, defined honestly
The uncomfortable truth: GEO, AEO and AIO overlap heavily, and a good deal of what sells as "GEO consulting" is SEO fundamentals with a new label. That does not make the shift unreal. It means the foundations still matter and there is genuinely new work on top.
If your technical SEO is broken, no amount of AI optimisation will save you. Machines cannot cite a page they cannot crawl. Fix the foundation first — the order matters more than the acronym.
What actually changed with AI answers
Three things changed, and each has a practical consequence.
1. The click became optional
When an AI Overview answers the question completely, nobody clicks. Informational queries that used to bring traffic now bring a citation at best. This is not reversible, and pretending otherwise is how businesses lose a year.
The consequence: shift your content mix towards queries where a click is still necessary — comparisons, pricing, local availability, anything requiring a decision or a transaction. A page answering "what is data analytics" will be summarised. A page answering "data analytics course fees in Pune with EMI" gets clicked, because the reader needs specifics only you hold.
2. Machines read structure, not prose style
An LLM assembling an answer needs to extract a claim, attribute it, and be confident it is current. Pages that make that easy get cited. Pages that bury the answer in paragraph six of a 3,000-word preamble do not.
The consequence: answer the question in the first two sentences under each heading, then elaborate. Use headings that match real questions. Put facts in tables and lists where the relationship between items is explicit.
3. Entities matter more than keywords
Models reason about entities — organisations, people, places, products and the relationships between them. A page that clearly establishes "Careers Ninza is an EducationalOrganization in Kolkata that offers a Course called Data Science & ML priced at ₹49,999" is far easier to cite than one repeating a keyword phrase twenty times.
The consequence: schema markup stops being a nice-to-have. It is how you tell a machine what you are, unambiguously.
The technical foundation, in the order that matters
Schema markup: the part most sites skip
Structured data is the highest-leverage work available in 2026, and the majority of Indian business websites have none. It costs nothing but attention.
Implement these as a linked @graph rather than isolated blocks, so machines can follow the relationships:
areaServed, sameAs links to your verified social profilesSearchAction — enables sitelinks search boxdateModified so freshness is machine-readableOffer and real pricesauthor and publisher — establishes provenance for editorial contentNever mark up content that is not visible on the page. It is against every search engine’s guidelines and it is the fastest way to lose rich results entirely.
GEO: getting cited inside AI answers
Beyond the foundations, a handful of patterns reliably increase citation frequency.
llms.txt. A plain-text summary of your site at the root, giving assistants a clean map of what you offer. Adoption is growing and the cost is one file.AEO: winning the snippet and the voice answer
Answer Engine Optimisation is the oldest of the three additions and the most mechanical. Featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes follow predictable formats.
ol or ul with short parallel items and no marketing padding.Mine People Also Ask boxes for the questions people actually ask, then answer each one properly with its own heading. This is unglamorous and it works.
Local search: ranking city by city across India
For most Indian businesses this is where the revenue is. Someone searching "digital marketing course in Indore" is closer to buying than someone searching "what is digital marketing".
Google Business Profile is the foundation
NAP consistency
Name, Address, Phone identical everywhere: your website, Google, Bing Places, Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Facebook, LinkedIn. Every inconsistency is a small reduction in confidence, and they accumulate.
City pages done properly — and the trap
City pages work. Mass-produced city pages get penalised. The difference is whether the page contains anything genuinely local.
A page that is your service page with the city name swapped in is a doorway page. Google has penalised these explicitly since 2015, and generating 500 of them is one of the fastest ways to damage a domain. Build pages for cities where you have something real to say — local batch timings, local roles, local partners, local case studies — and cover the rest with one well-built location hub.
For each priority city, include: locally relevant content, city-specific FAQs, a Service schema node with areaServed scoped to that city, internal links to nearby cities, and honest information about whether you operate there physically or serve it remotely.
Local link and citation building
A 90-day plan
Days 1–30: fix the foundation
Days 31–60: build the content that earns clicks
Days 61–90: measure and compound
What to measure now that clicks are unreliable
The honest summary
Do the foundations properly, because nothing else works without them. Add schema, because most of your competitors have not. Write answer-first content on queries that still need a click. Build local presence city by city with genuinely local substance. Permit the AI crawlers. Measure impressions and citations rather than clicks alone.
There is no trick here, and anyone selling you one is selling you a risk. The businesses that will rank in 2027 are the ones doing unglamorous work consistently in 2026.
Our SEO & AI Search Mastery workshop covers all of this hands-on over 20 hours, worked on a real site — audit, fix, publish, measure.
