Performance marketing course in India: what the job is and what it pays

Performance marketing is judged on one number. What the role involves, the CAC maths employers test you on, salaries by city, and how to build a portfolio without an employer.

Performance marketing is the part of marketing where you are judged on one question: can you buy customers profitably and prove it? Everything else is a means to that end.

That makes it the most measurable marketing career in India, the fastest to demonstrate competence in, and the least forgiving if you cannot read numbers.

What the job actually involves

ActivityShare of timeReality
Reading numbers and diagnosing30%The actual job
Creative briefing and testing25%The main lever now
Campaign setup and maintenance20%Increasingly automated
Measurement and tracking fixes15%Where accounts silently break
Reporting to stakeholders10%Decides whether you get budget

Note what is small: campaign setup. Meta and Google have automated most of the mechanical work. What remains valuable is deciding what to test, reading whether it worked, and fixing measurement so the algorithm learns correctly.

The maths you will be tested on

Every serious performance marketing interview includes some version of this. Candidates who cannot do it are eliminated regardless of platform knowledge.

1Contribution margin per order. Revenue minus product cost, shipping, packaging, payment gateway and expected returns. In Indian ecommerce add RTO cost on COD orders — commonly 15–30%.
2Allowable CAC. What you can pay for a customer while still making money, on first order and on lifetime value. Two numbers, two strategies.
3Break-even ROAS. Average order value divided by contribution margin. If AOV is ₹1,500 and margin is ₹450, break-even ROAS is 3.33.
4Payback period. How many months until a customer repays acquisition cost. This determines how aggressively you can scale.
5Blended CAC. Total spend divided by total new customers — the only figure that survives scrutiny, because platform-reported numbers double-count.

The skill stack, in order of value

Measurement. GA4, Tag Manager, server-side tracking, Meta Conversions API, offline conversion import. Genuinely scarce and the best-paid part of the stack.
Diagnosis. Performance dropped — is it tracking, creative fatigue, landing page, auction conditions, or something you changed? Working through that in order.
Creative strategy. Since targeting is automated, creative is the main remaining lever. Briefing concepts, not tweaking headlines.
Channel execution. Meta and Google structure, bidding, scaling rules. Necessary, and the most commoditised part.
Experimentation. Hypothesis, sample size, significance, and why a two-day A/B test means nothing.
Reporting. One page, four numbers, one paragraph. Marketers who report activity get treated as a cost; those who report contribution get budget.

Salary in India

LevelMonthlyWhat sits at the top
0–1 year₹20,000–₹35,000Executing under supervision
1–3 years₹35,000–₹70,000Owning a channel
3–5 years₹70,000–₹1,30,000Owning budget and a CAC target
5–8 years₹1,20,000–₹2,50,000Owning the growth number
Growth head₹2,00,000–₹4,00,000+Owning the P&L line

Bengaluru and Gurugram lead, followed by Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad. D2C brands and startups pay above agencies for equivalent experience, though agencies give faster exposure to many accounts — which is why many careers start there deliberately.

Building a portfolio without an employer

This is the honest advantage of performance marketing: you can prove competence with your own money.

1Spend ₹5,000–₹10,000 of your own on a real product. Yours, a friend’s business, or an affiliate offer. The amount matters less than the fact that it is real.
2Set up tracking properly first. GA4, conversion events, Pixel with Conversions API. Doing this once teaches more than any tutorial.
3Run for three weeks with a written hypothesis. Record what you changed and why.
4Write a one-page report. Spend, conversions, CAC, what worked, what did not, what you would do next.
5Show it in interviews. Almost no candidate has one, which is precisely why it works.

A campaign that lost money is still a valid portfolio piece if you can explain why. Interviewers respect a diagnosis more than a suspiciously perfect result — and they can tell the difference.

Market opportunity

Indian D2C, edtech, fintech and services businesses all run on paid acquisition, and most run it badly. The failures are consistent: no allowable CAC calculated, browser-only tracking losing a third of signal, no offline conversion import for sales closing on a call, and reporting on platform ROAS rather than blended contribution.

Each is fixable by one competent person, and the improvement is measurable. That is why performance marketing salaries have held up while broader marketing roles compressed — the work produces a number that appears in the P&L.

Performance marketing training across India

Careers Ninza runs every batch live online, so the class is identical whether you join from a metro or a tier-2 city — same mentor, same time, same fee. There is no separate recorded track for students outside our classroom cities, and no city-based pricing.

TIER 1 CITIES

Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Pune.

TIER 2 CITIES

Jaipur, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Indore, Bhopal, Coimbatore, Surat, Kochi, Nagpur, Patna, Vadodara, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Kanpur, Agra, Amritsar, Dehradun, Mysuru, Thiruvananthapuram, Nashik, Rajkot, Varanasi, Meerut, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Srinagar. See all locations →

Classroom batches run in Kolkata, Asansol and Durgapur. Everywhere else is live online, which in practice most working professionals and students prefer — no commute, and every session is recorded for revision.

Why Careers Ninza

Live, never pre-recorded. Every session is taught in real time by a working practitioner. There is no cheaper self-paced tier, because removing the live class removes the reason the course works.
125,000+ students trained since 2014. Twelve years of running live batches, not a platform that appeared last year.
100+ mentors who still do the job. Analysts, engineers, marketers and founders teaching what they practise this quarter.
Measurement taught as a core skill. Server-side tracking, CAPI and offline conversion import worked in real accounts — the scarcest part of the stack, and the part most courses skip entirely.
No-Cost EMI, zero hidden fees. The listed fee is the fee. No interest, no processing charge, no lender.
Rejoin any future batch free if you fall behind, and lifetime access to every recording.
Honest claims. No job guarantees, no invented placement percentages, no implied accreditation.

Performance Marketing & Growth Hacking is three months at ₹24,999 with No-Cost EMI — paid acquisition, CAC discipline, experimentation and the full measurement stack, ending in a live campaign you ran.

Frequently asked questions

What is performance marketing?+

Marketing measured on a specific outcome — a sale, a lead, an install — rather than reach or impressions. The practitioner is judged on cost per acquisition and return on ad spend, which makes it the most measurable marketing discipline and the least forgiving of people who cannot read numbers.

What is the fee for a performance marketing course in India?+

Careers Ninza charges ₹24,999 for the three-month Performance Marketing & Growth Hacking program with No-Cost EMI of ₹10,000 × 3. Individual 20-hour workshops on Meta Ads and Google Ads are ₹9,999 each. Market rates elsewhere run ₹15,000 to ₹80,000 depending on depth and whether the course is live.

What is the salary of a performance marketer in India?+

Entry roles pay ₹20,000 to ₹35,000 monthly, one to three years ₹35,000 to ₹70,000, three to five years ₹70,000 to ₹1,30,000, and growth heads ₹2,00,000 upwards. Bengaluru and Gurugram lead, with D2C brands and startups paying above agencies for equivalent experience.

What is the difference between digital marketing and performance marketing?+

Digital marketing covers everything online including brand, content, SEO and social. Performance marketing is the subset judged strictly on measurable outcomes and cost per acquisition. Performance marketers typically earn more because the work produces a number that appears in the P&L.

Do I need coding for performance marketing?+

No, but you need comfort with numbers and some technical setup. Google Tag Manager, GA4 event configuration and server-side tracking involve no programming but do require precision. That measurement layer is the scarcest and best-paid part of the skill set.

How do I build a performance marketing portfolio with no experience?+

Spend ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 of your own money on a real product — yours, a friend business, or an affiliate offer. Set up tracking properly, run for three weeks with a written hypothesis, and produce a one-page report covering spend, CAC, what worked and what you would do next.

Which is better, agency or in-house performance marketing?+

Agencies give faster exposure to many accounts and categories, which accelerates learning early. In-house roles at D2C brands and startups pay more and give deeper ownership of the number. Many strong careers start at an agency deliberately and move in-house after two to three years.

Is performance marketing available as a course in my city?+

Yes. Batches run live online, so learners join from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Jaipur, Indore, Coimbatore, Kochi, Bhubaneswar, Nagpur and every other Indian city at the same fee. Classroom batches run in Kolkata, Asansol and Durgapur.

Will AI replace performance marketers?+

AI has already automated most campaign setup and targeting, which removed the mechanical part of the job. What it has not replaced is deciding what to test, diagnosing why performance dropped, fixing measurement so the algorithm learns correctly, and judging what a customer is worth. Those are now the whole role.

How long does it take to become a performance marketer?+

Three months of live training with a real campaign is enough to be employable at entry level, provided you actually spend money and track results. Reaching the ₹70,000 plus band typically takes two to three years of owning budgets and being accountable for a CAC target.
