Meta Conversions API: the setup guide, and why Pixel alone is not enough
How much signal browser-only tracking loses, three ways to implement CAPI, how deduplication actually works, and the offline conversion upload that matters most for Indian businesses.
Meta’s ad system is only as good as the data reaching it. Since Lattice consolidated ranking into one model learning across objectives, signal quality has become more consequential than targeting — and most Indian advertisers are still sending browser-only events.
How much you actually lose with Pixel alone
Browser-based tracking fails for reasons entirely outside your control.
The practical consequence is not just under-reporting. Meta optimises towards the conversions it can see, so missing events actively distort what the algorithm learns. An account losing 30% of purchase events is being trained on a biased sample.
This matters more in India than in most markets. A large share of traffic is mid-range Android on variable connections, and browser abandonment before the Pixel fires is common. Server-side tracking is not an optimisation here — it is the difference between the algorithm learning correctly and learning wrong.
What Conversions API actually is
CAPI sends conversion events from your server directly to Meta, rather than from the visitor’s browser. The browser can be blocked; your server cannot. Both run together, and Meta deduplicates.
Three ways to implement it
Route one: platform integration
If you are on Shopify, this takes an afternoon and covers most of what you need.
Route two: server-side GTM
The right choice for custom sites and the most useful skill to have, because the same setup serves Google, Meta and any other platform simultaneously.
data.yourdomain.com, so requests are first-party and survive browser restrictions.Deduplication: the part people get wrong
Sending both browser and server events without correct deduplication double-counts conversions, which makes reporting useless and misleads the algorithm.
event_id on both. A unique value per conversion, identical in the browser and server call. This is what Meta matches on.event_name. Purchase and purchase are not the same event. Casing matters.fbp and fbc cookies in the server event. Without them, matching degrades badly.Event Match Quality, and how to raise it
Meta scores how well it can attribute your events to real people. Below 5.0 is poor; above 7.0 is good. Raising it usually improves performance more than any bidding change.
In India, phone number is often the strongest identifier you hold — many customers order without an email but never without a mobile number. Hash it with SHA-256, normalised to digits only with country code, and match quality usually jumps.
Offline conversions: the step that matters most here
This is where Indian businesses gain the most and do the least. If your sale closes on a phone call or over WhatsApp — education, real estate, healthcare, B2B services, high-value retail — Meta never learns which leads actually bought. So it optimises for people who fill forms rather than people who pay.
The effect is usually larger than any creative or bidding work. You are changing what the algorithm is trying to find, from form-fillers to buyers.

Market opportunity
Correct server-side tracking is a genuinely scarce skill in Indian digital marketing. Most freelancers and many agencies cannot implement server-side GTM, cannot debug deduplication and have never uploaded an offline conversion. Marketers who can command noticeably higher rates — both because it is technical and because the impact on account performance is measurable in a way most marketing work is not.
Why Careers Ninza
