Cloud and DevOps careers in India: what the work is and what it pays
One of the best-paid technical careers in India, and one of the most misunderstood. What DevOps engineers actually do, salary by city, and the six things employers test.
Cloud and DevOps is among the best-paid technical careers in India and among the most misdescribed. It is not a tool list. It is the discipline of making software deployable, observable and affordable — and the pay reflects how few people do it well.
What the job actually involves
Cost management is the most undersold part of this career and the fastest way to become indispensable. An engineer who cuts a cloud bill by 30% has paid for their own salary, and that argument works in every company in India.
Roles and salary
By city
DevOps is one of the most remote-friendly technical roles in India, because the infrastructure is already remote. A candidate in Indore, Coimbatore or Bhubaneswar with a deployed multi-service architecture and an IaC repository competes on the same terms as anyone in Bengaluru.
The six things employers test
A candidate who can speak to all six with specifics from their own work is immediately credible. Certifications help pass HR screening; these six get you hired.
Certifications: honest guidance
AWS and Azure certifications are worth taking, with a realistic expectation. They open interviews, particularly in IT services and for GCC roles, and some employers filter on them. They do not demonstrate that you can run anything, and interviewers know that.
The efficient sequence is to build a real deployed system first, then certify. You will pass the exam more easily and you will have something to talk about when the technical round starts. Note that vendor exam fees are paid directly to AWS or Microsoft — no training provider issues those.
Career progression
Market opportunity
Two durable drivers. Indian enterprises are still mid-migration — a large share of workloads remain on premise or half-moved, and each migration needs people who can do it without breaking things. And cloud costs have become a board-level concern, which has created genuine demand for engineers who can reduce spend rather than just provision resources.
There is also a supply problem in the middle. Junior candidates with certifications are plentiful. Engineers with three to six years who have actually owned production, been on call and cut a cloud bill are scarce, which is why that band has seen the sharpest pay growth.
Cloud and DevOps roles cluster in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Delhi NCR, but the function is unusually remote-friendly, so location matters less here than in almost any other technical career. Careers Ninza teaches this live online, so learners join from Kolkata, Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Indore, Nagpur, Coimbatore, Asansol, Durgapur, Siliguri, Patna, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Gwalior, Noida, Gurugram and every other Indian city. Why Careers Ninza
What a realistic first DevOps interview looks like
Worth knowing in advance, because the format is consistent across Indian employers and the failure points are predictable.
The strongest thing you can bring is a system you deployed, broke and fixed, with the reasoning written down. Architecture decision records convert better in senior interviews than any certificate.
The on-call question, answered honestly
DevOps and SRE roles usually carry on-call rotation. It is the genuine trade-off behind the pay, and worth deciding on before committing six months.
In a well-run team it means one week in four to six, most weeks quiet, alerts that are actionable, and time back after a bad night. In a badly-run team it means constant noise and no recovery. Ask about it directly in interviews — the answer tells you a great deal about engineering maturity, because teams that have invested in observability answer confidently.
Cloud Architecture & DevOps Integration is six months on AWS and Azure, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD and observability — ending in a deployed system with a cost and security review.
SEE THE COURSEA realistic roadmap
Six months of consistent part-time work gets a motivated career switcher to junior-DevOps employable, provided the outcome is a deployed system rather than completed videos. Engineers already in a technical role often move faster because the Linux and networking foundation is already there.
