18-month programme vs 6-month bootcamp: which actually makes you job-ready?
Neither length is automatically better. What job-ready really means, what fits in six months versus eighteen, and how to choose based on where you are starting from.
It depends on where you start. A six-month bootcamp can make you job-ready if you already program and want one new skill. If you are starting from zero, six months rarely covers fundamentals, a specialisation and a real portfolio, so a longer programme of around 18 months is usually the more realistic route to being job-ready.
Course length is often sold as a feature: “job-ready in 12 weeks” on one side, “the complete journey” on the other. Neither claim means much on its own. What matters is how many hours of real learning you get, what those hours cover, and whether you finish. Careers Ninza runs both six-month programmes and an 18-month programme, so this guide tries to be fair to both.
What does “job-ready” actually mean?
Employers do not hire a certificate. For an entry-level developer, data or AI role, they typically check whether you can:
For AI roles, add enough maths and machine learning understanding to explain how a model works, not just how to call it. That list takes time, and the time needed depends almost entirely on your starting point.
What can you realistically learn in 6 months versus 18?
A useful way to compare programmes is total live learning hours, not months. Always ask for this number. Program Zero, for example, runs 1.5-hour live classes five days a week for 78 weeks, which works out to roughly 7.5 hours of weekday class a week, before Saturday projects and Sunday doubt sessions. Bootcamps vary widely, so check each one.
When is a 6-month programme the right choice?
A shorter programme is often the better option when:
For example, our six-month Agentic AI, GenAI and LLM Application Development programme is built for developers and engineers moving into AI work, not for people writing their first line of code. That is the honest fit for a six-month format.
When is 18 months worth it?
A longer programme earns its length when you are starting from zero, or when your goal is deep rather than narrow.
Program Zero’s guide to ten criteria for comparing any AI course in India is a useful checklist whichever length you are considering.
What are the downsides of a long programme?
Being honest about these helps you decide, and helps you succeed if you choose one.
If you are switching careers in your late twenties or thirties, our realistic plan for switching to tech at 25–35 explains how to manage a long learning period alongside a job.
Which format fits which learner?
Three typical profiles make the choice clearer.
A backend developer with three years of experience
She writes production code daily and wants to build LLM applications. Her fundamentals are already in place, so a focused six-month programme on AI application development is the efficient choice. An 18-month programme would spend its first year on things she already knows.
A 22-year-old commerce graduate starting from zero
He has never programmed and wants to work in AI engineering. Six months would cover the basics of Python and perhaps some machine learning libraries, but not data structures, databases, maths or deployment in any depth. An 18-month programme gives him time to build each layer properly and a portfolio across several areas.
A 29-year-old accountant aiming for an analyst role
Her goal is a bridge role in finance analytics, not software engineering. A six-month analytics programme matches that goal. If she later wants to move into data science or AI, a longer path makes sense then, built on the analytics foundation.
The pattern: short programmes suit a narrow step from an existing base; long programmes suit a wide step from a low base.
How should you judge any programme?
What does Program Zero cost, and what are the terms?
Program Zero is Careers Ninza’s 18-month live programme in AI, large language models and full-stack development. It has 13 phases, six quarterly tests and certificates on merit. Live classes run Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 10:30 PM IST, every class is recorded, Saturdays are for projects and Sunday doubt sessions run from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
The fee is ₹5,999 for all 18 months, inclusive of taxes, as a single payment; see Program Zero’s fees and what the membership includes. Payments are non-refundable once made, so read the refund policy first. It is open to anyone living in India aged 15 or above, needs no CS degree, and the next batch starts on 9 January 2027. More details are on the Program Zero website.
Want to learn this live, with mentors?
Program Zero is 18 months of live, mentor-led learning in AI, LLMs and full-stack development, from your first line of code to building language models. ₹5,999 for all 18 months; the batch starts 9 January 2027.
